About 13,000 people connected to the Pembina Valley Water Co-op system will be affected by a precautionary boil water advisory that will go into effect next week.

The Water Co-op has scheduled some maintenance work on its reservoir at the Letellier treatment plant that will begin on Monday, December 14 starting at 9 am.

CEO Greg Archibald says they'll need to send divers into the treated water reservoir to replace some isolation valves.

"Because the divers are in the reservoir, which is for drinking water, it's an automatic regulation from Manitoba Health to put out a boil water advisory."

Once the repairs on finished, Archibald says two consecutive tests on the water must be conducted and once those tests prove the water is safe, the boil water advisory can be lifted.

Archibald was asked how long the advisory will last.

"This is where it gets a little difficult because the maintenance work may vary, but it will go from December 14th to December 18th if we're lucky. If we have some more issues requiring more repairs then it will last until Monday, December 21st."

The precautionary water advisory will impact the following communities:

  • Town of Altona
  • Municipality of Rhineland including Plum Coulee, Rosenfeld, and Gretna
  • Parts of the Municipality of Emerson Franklin, including the Emerson system
  • Parts of the RM of Stanley (Reinfeld system)
  • Parts of the RM of Montcalm including Letellier, and St. Joeseph (does not included St. Jean)
  • Halbstadt - Marias Water Cooperative
  • Altona Rural Water Cooperative
  • Roseau River First Nation
  • Blumengart Colony
