Frieda Peters
(nee Schellenberg)
September 1, 1932 - March 12, 2024

Upheld by the love of her family, Frieda Peters died on March 12, 2024, after a brief stay in hospital at the age of 91. A warm and gentle woman, she will be remembered for the quiet confidence with which she lived out her faith. Frieda was a woman of prayer who exuded kindness, compassion, intelligence, generosity, and integrity.
Frieda is predeceased by her husband, Jake (2007), of forty-six years. Her spirit and memory will be cherished by her children David (Jorene), Laura (Reymond), Randy (Dana), and she will be dearly missed by her grandchildren June, Daniel, Matthew, Jordan, and step-grandchild Jacob.

Frieda, daughter of Johann and Anna (Dueck) Schellenberg was born in Kleefeld, Manitoba on Sept 1, 1932. Her family owned the general store where they worked together in every aspect of the business. It was in this loving community that she enjoyed a happy childhood with cousins, friends, and siblings; connections that she valued throughout her life. Frieda is predeceased by her brother Levi (Lena), sister Helen, and is survived by sister Betty (Walter), and brother-in-law Abe, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

In her early twenties Frieda trained as a nurse. Her work took her to Steinbach, Saskatoon, and St. Anthony, Newfoundland with M.C.C. During her nurse’s training, she made lifelong friends, many of whom met annually throughout the years. At age 26 she chose to attend the Steinbach Bible Institute where she met Jake Peters. They were married in 1961 and his family warmly accepted her as a daughter, sister, and aunt. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law Tiena, Susie, and Tena, as well as her many nieces and nephews.
After several moves early in their marriage, Jake and Frieda made their home in Portage la Prairie. Once the children arrived, Frieda dedicated her time to nurturing their home life, volunteering, and becoming an active member of the Portage Evangelical Mennonite Church and the Portage Mennonite Church. She valued friends she made over many years of volunteering with the M.C.C. Thrift & Gift store in Portage. Annual family camping vacations were full of memorable adventures and also provided opportunities to visit with distant relatives and friends.

In their retirement, Jake and Frieda moved to Winnipeg to be closer to family. Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship became their faith community. Here they participated in a number of small groups over the years and forged strong connections and friendships. For the past six years, Frieda lived at Lindenwood Terrace, and she loved the friends she met there. She continued to do things she had enjoyed her whole life such as reading, puzzling, and spending time with friends and family. Frieda also took great delight in following the lives of her grandchildren through their work, travels, and academic pursuits.
