It was never a question whether the Rhineland Empty Stocking Fund was moving forward this Christmas season, rather how to in the safest way possible considering today’s restrictions. The board met back in October and decided then it was important to find a way to continue their tradition of ensuring families in need in the Altona area had a meal on the table and gifts under the tree for their children at Christmas.

With that in mind, Spokesperson Cindy Hildebrand says it’s full sleigh ahead for the group.

“We typically prepare for about 180 hampers, (and) we are fully expecting that number will be higher this year, but we are also prepared for that,” says Hildebrand. “We do recognize there is a need, and in some cases, this might be the only gift they receive, so we’re happy to gift it to them on behalf of the community.”

Considering today’s COVID-19 related restrictions and considerations, the group has moved away from hamper packing this year and is providing grocery vouchers to Altona IGA and Sun Valley Co-op. Also, the nine board members took it upon themselves to wrap the dozens of gifts that will be given to the children of recipient families as another way to ensure things moved ahead safely.

“There are families, for their kids, this might be the only gift that they give, and if we hadn't proceeded, what might have their Christmas looked like,” reflects Hildebrand. “This year, yes, it will look decidedly different than last year, but we’re still proceeding, and that’s the important part, that we can give some cheer, some gifts to kids that may not have received anything this year.”

Family referrals are being accepted until noon December 4th, and you can do that by calling 204-324-7167. Be sure to provide the family’s name, whether there are children, how many, what ages and whether they are girls or boys, and the family’s address.

Also, you can support the Rhineland Empty Stocking Fund through CFAM Radio 950’s Toys Days in partnership with the Great Canadian Dollar Store in Altona Mall. You can make a donation online by clicking here, and provide toys to kids who need them most this season.
