Isaiah Peters and Trent Penner scored late in the second period as the Winkler Flyers defeated the Steinbach Pistons 2-1 Friday night in Niverville in game one of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best-of-seven final for the Turnbull Cup. Penner notched his sixth of the post-season with just one second left in the middle frame. Leo Chambers had the lone goal for the Pistons with 2:28 left in regulation. The defending champions had a chance to tie the game late in regulation on the power play. Winkler forward Nich McKee was assessed a tripping penalty with 76 seconds left. Steinbach head coach Paul Dyck then pulled goaltender Cole Plowman for an extra attacker but the Pistons, with the 6-on-4 man advantage, couldn’t put the equalizer past Malachi Klassen who made 27 saves on the night. The Flyers have won five straight road games. Game two goes Sunday night at the Centennial Arena in Winkler.


Kristian Reichel scored twice and Ville Heinola had a goal and four assists as the Manitoba Moose bounced the Texas Stars 8-3. The Moose play their regular season finale tonight against the Stars in Texas.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, B.C. Lions and Hamilton Tiger-Cats have been fined by the Canadian Football League for exceeding the salary cap which was $5.45 million in 2023. Hamilton went over the cap by $2,654; Winnipeg was over by $25,947 while B.C. went over by $85,979. All three teams were fined the amount they exceeded the cap. The 2024 salary cap is set at $5.525 million.


Manitoba and Canadian champions Kadriana & Colton Lott play their round robin opener today (8 a.m.) against Courtney Smith & Anton Hood of New Zealand at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Oestersund, Sweden.
