Our Member of Parliament is defending the billion dollar cost of security for the G8 and G20 summit conferences later this month in Toronto. Leaders of the top countries in the world will be in Ontario June 25th to 27th to discuss the world economy.

Vic Toews, who is Public Safety minister, says there's no way around the security expense. He says, "I agree these are very expensive propositions, no question about it. But if Canada wants to be a world player and wants to participate in the G8 and G20, these are the kind of expenses that member states are required to shoulder when they have the meetings taking place in their own countries".

Toews also says the security costs are in line with what other countries pay when they host these events. And he notes these conferences have long term benefits for Canada through the agreements that are achieved there.
