A wine tasting evening was held this month at the Access Event Centre in Morden to bolster the newly opened Corn and Apple endowment fund.

Executive Director of the Morden Area Foundation(MAF), Lynda MacLean, said the event was a terrific way to support the Corn and Apple's new endeavour

"I knew this would make money," she said. MacLean added the turnout was everything she was hoping for.

This Corn and Apple fund is held by the MAF, which holds many similar funds for groups and organizations in the area. All that money, held by MAF, is transferred to the Winnipeg Foundation. Just like MAF looks after a group of funds in this area, the Winnipeg Foundation does the same for much of the province's charities.

This massive amount of money is invested, and the various groups can withdraw the interest to pay for their expenses.

MacLean was hoping to sell 300 tickets for the Friday night tasting. That would bring in $7,500, and with most of the costs covered, the Corn and Apple committee would be that much further ahead for next year's festival.

"This is crazy," said MacLean about the crowds milling around the community hall. "I'm very excited."

All the wine was free of charge to the MAF because the wine companies use events like this to market their product. Food also came free, donated by the Co-op grocery store in Morden.

The 13 wine companies offered a variety of flavours and vintages Friday night. If one person drank one of each wine sample available, it would be like drinking two bottles by yourself.
