A group of 10 students from Morden Collegiate Institute have committed to volunteering with the Youth In Philanthropy (YIP) committee this year.

The group is passionate about raising money for the community and are hoping to beat last year's total; just over $6,000.

"Last year we only had three students, and we got a lot done," said Chloe Mcleod, a grade eleven student who's been involved with YIP for two years. She believes this year

Chloe Mcleod (left) and Zariya Martens (right) are the only two returning students on the YIP committee this year will be even better thanks to their larger group.

During their meeting on Wednesday, the group was discussing a Halloween fashion show and, an annual favourite, a bake sale during parent/teacher interviews in November.

"Last year that was where we raised the most money," said Zariya Martens, who's also in grade eleven. This is Marten's third year with YIP.

Each year, the group tries to raise at least $3,000 because the Morden Area Foundation matches their total up to that amount.

There are only two returning students in this year's committee, Mcleod and Martens. The rest are new to the group.

"It's exciting to see new and different students come to the group," said Phillip Duncan, drama teacher at MCI and the leader of YIP at the school.

A movie night for the community is also a regular event the YIP group plans. Duncan mentioned that part of the committee's goal is to encourage community activity.

Duncan has led the YIP committee for the past eight years.

One of the most popular and lucrative fundraisers the group plans every year is a bake sale during the parent/teacher interviews at Morden Collegiate in November
