There's lots of noise in the markets right now.

Canfax analyst Brian Perillat says recent factors include the trade dispute between China and the U.S. and current talks surrounding NAFTA.

He notes the markets have been volatile from a futures standpoint for cattle, hogs, grains, and currencies.

“For the most part the western Canadian markets have been fairly seasonal through a lot of this volatility," said Perillat. "Fed cattle prices have been slipping a little bit lower, which isn't unusual at this time. Feeder and calf prices have been pretty steady to slightly stronger since the spring market.”

Perillat says we have seen a few more feeder exports going to the U.S.

He adds cattle supplies in western Canada should be modest heading into the fall.
