The delay in harvest is also leading to a delay in fall fertilizer applications.

John Heard is a soil fertility specialist with Manitoba Agriculture.

"Fall fertilization, when things are this wet, is fraught with problems just because the loss potential is high when we have wet soil," he said. "On sandy soils we might have leaching, but certainly on the clay soils, when they're wet, that's when we expect denitrification is high."

Heard says with increased options, many farmers may choose to apply fertilizer in the spring.

He notes the first order of business for farmers is to get the remaining crop off of the field.
