The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says it has discovered a few genetically modified (GM) and herbicide tolerant wheat plants in Alberta.

The isolated discovery was made during the summer of 2017 along a farm access road.

Genetically modified wheat is not approved for use in Canada, however the trait that was found is approved for use in canola, corn, and soybeans.

Officials say there is no evidence that the GM wheat has entered the grain or seed system, and there is no food safety risk. It is not known where the plants came from.

It is not yet known what affect this might have on international trade.

Officials plan to work with the affected landowner over the next three years.
