There has been a positive step forward when it comes to shipping Canadian pulses into India.

Canada is trying to work out a long term solution with India for shipping pulses into that country.

Up until now, India has been granting Canada exemptions to an import regulation regarding mandatory fumigation of imported crops.

The current exemption is in place until June 30th.

Gord Kurbis, director of market access and trade policy with Pulse Canada, says that India has shared a draft notification with them that was sent to the World Trade Organization last week.

This was the first indication from India that it will recognize that a systems approach is effective in making sure no quarantined pest makes in into India.

Kurbis notes that Pulse Canada is currently putting official comments to the notification.

He adds the issue of phosphine fumigation still needs to be worked out.
