A group in Beausejour is planning to move a vintage grain elevator into town from the nearby community of Tyndall.

The Broken-Beau Historical Society is planning to move the structure about 14 kilometres from its site in Tyndall to the Pioneer Village Museum located in Beausejour.

Trevor Proutt, who chairs both organizations, said they were given the elevator free of charge. The structure has been in Tyndall since the mid-1940's, but has not been used for about four or five years.

He says the elevator is in pretty good shape.

"The owners actually in the 70's or 80's, actually clad it in metal, so it actually saved it from any huge amount of rot. The metal goes right from the base all the way to the top."

So far the group has raised about $50,000 towards its $400,000 dollar goal. Proutt says they are looking for public donations or corporate grants before they approach the government for funding.

He explained what it would take to move such a large structure.

"We got a quote out of a western Manitoba company called Minty's Moving and they're bringing in all the specialized equipment to jack it up off it's existing foundation and then putting the axles underneath. It would have to be done in winter for the frozen ground to come down Highway 44 and into the town of Beausejour and then across some fields, so it would have to be pretty solidly frozen."

The move is being planned for February of 2018.
