Manitoba Pork says there were a record 82 cases of the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PED) in the province in 2019. The breakdown is as follows: 29 sow, 14 nursery, 38 finisher, 1 quarantine barn.

That surpasses the previous record of 80 set in 2017.

Jenelle Hamblin is the organization's Manager of Swine Health Programs.

"Certainly not something that we wanted to see across the sector this year but something that we continue to manage and work through even today," she said.

While the disease had been traditionally contained to the southeast, Hamblin notes they are starting to see more cases in the Morris/Lowe Farm area. There were also a couple of cases in the Whitemouth region.

Hamblin is encouraging producers to sign up for the Manitoba Coordinated Disease Response Program.
