Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiatives (MBFI) hosted a tour Thursday at its First Street Pasture Site near Brandon.

The goal of the day was for producers to learn more about the grazing cattle research happening at the site.

Jane Thornton, Forage and Rangeland Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, talked about some of the work being done at the pasture, which is situated on poor quality land.

"The projects on there are looking at what can we do that is low cost but perhaps to increase production on this type of land," she said. "So we're looking at weed control of leafy spurge with bio-controls and then the more novel idea is teaching the cattle to eat leafy spurge."

Thornton notes with the price of pasture land increasing, it is becoming more important for producers to find ways to maximize the land they already own.

About 70 people took part in the tour.
