The National Farmers Union (NFU) is launching an online and mail out survey to ask farmers how they are being treated when they deliver grain at the elevator.

Manitoba Regional Coordinator Ian Robson explains the purpose behind the survey.

"We've known for a long time that farmers dealing with elevators have concerns about the grade that they receive," he said. "We're hearing quite a few stories from different places. they take a sample and then you take the truck load and for some other reason the load may be refused and you take the load home again. In other cases, maybe with barley, it's always been a problem about malt, there's issues in all kinds of crops."

The group says the submissions will be kept confidential and will be aggregated for reporting purposes.

“This will allow the NFU to determine how wide spread this problem has become in view of the Canadian Grain Commission’s reduced regulatory role” said NFU President Jan Slomp. “The Canadian Grain Commission’s mandate to protect farmers still exists and the survey results will allow us to promote solutions for any problems that are identified”

The online survey is now open to all Canadian grain farmers.
