There have been no new cases of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) in Manitoba since September of 2016.

Mark Fynn is the manager of quality assurance and animal care programs with Manitoba Pork.

He says the five cases from 2016 have all gone presumptive negative, which means the pigs and barns have been cleaned up and they can get shipped safely to other buyers.

Fynn, speaking earlier this month at the group's AGM, informed delegates about some of the work currently underway.

"The on-farm assurance programs for both food safety and animal care are being revisited and updated and improved," he explained. "On the food safety side, we're just incorporating a couple of new requirements to bring it up-to-date and meet the expectations of our buyers and on the animal care side we're incorporating the code of practice requirements into the assessment program to make sure those are being met, as those are the public expectations."

Fynn says they are also placing a focus on training to make sure people understand what the programs are all about and why they are in place.
