There's been a lot of concern among Canadian exporters over our trade relationship with the US.

President Trump has already taken the US out of the TPP, and is now promising to renegotiate NAFTA.

Cereals Canada President Cam Dahl says it's not time to press the panic button just yet, however we also can't afford to be complacent in the face of a rising anti-trade movement around the globe.

"There's underlying reasons why trade has become a difficult word in many parts of the world and we are seeing a rise of nationalistic sentiment and we're seeing a rise of protectionism that comes with it," he commented. "As an exporting nation and as an exporting industry we need to pay attention to those concerns and address them where we can."

Dahl says an example of this is Italy, which is proposing country of origin labelling for durum which would increase the cost for exporters here in Canada.

He adds it's important for the Canadian agriculture industry to speak with a common voice on these issues.
