A production specialist with Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers says some soybeans are now reaching the second trifoliate stage.

Cassandra Tkachuk notes dry beans are now reaching the early V-stages.

She has some advice for assessing plant stands.

"It's recommended to assess soybean plant stands anywhere between the V1 or first trifoliate stage and R1 or first flower stages. This generally progresses throughout the month of June," explained Tkachuk. "Dry bean plant stand assessment should also be taking place right now as well."

Tkachuk says producers should compare plant stand numbers to seeding rates to find out if targets were reached.

She adds now is also the time to be scouting for early season root rot and seedling diseases, noting when looking for diseases, it's important to scout above and below the soil. Farmers may be required to submit their plants to a laboratory for disease confirmation.

Scouting for cutworms, wireworms, and seed corn maggot should also be a key priority for farmers at this time.
