Now's the time for farmers to be out in their fields scouting for weeds.

That from Provincial Weed Specialist Jeanette Gauthier, who says many of the winter annuals are already starting to grow.

She notes it could be a bad year for dandelions, based on the number of plants there was last year and the conducive over-wintering conditions.

Green foxtail was the number one weed in the 2016 provincial weed survey, however Gauthier notes there is another weed producers should be on the lookout for.

"I think one of the movers up the list, that has become more troublesome for Prairie farmers is the volunteer canola," she said. "That's ranked at number five and I think that's going to be one of the tougher ones that guys have to deal with."

Gauthier adds yellow foxtail is also becoming more prevalent, especially in the Red River Valley.
