Altona’s Gallery in the Park hosted its first of three Summer Music Nights Wednesday evening on the patio amongst the beautifully manicured grounds and sculpture garden.

The mother and daughter duo of Nicole Peters and Nya Dubyk, accompanied by Lyle Wiens on percussion and Curt Friesen on guitar, were some of the performers. Nya has been performing on stage since she was five, singing, playing keyboard and violin which she's done for about 15 years.

"I'll be singing with my mom, and playing keys on a few songs, and then playing some violin on a few songs," shared Nya before the group took the stage, noting she had been playing violin for about fifteen years. "I think music is just such a good way to express yourself and express your emotions. I'm a big fan of string instruments. I feel like you can express yourself better through string instruments than with most other instruments."

Nicole noted Wednesday night was far from the first time she and her daughter had been together on stage.

"We've been doing it for a while, I think the first time was when she was 5 or 6 in a public place," said Peters who added it was on stage at a wedding..

"I feel like we do it so often, we have a very musical family, and so we're just always singing," reflected Nya.

Renae Friesen is Events Coordinator for Gallery in the Park, and was thrilled with the turnout Wednesday night. She's looking forward to showcasing even more local talent at the two remaining events this Summer.

"We really want to showcase the talent we have in our town," she shared. "We have so many fabulous musicians and artists that have these amazing abilities, so we want to give them a place where they can showcase that talent."

There will be two additional Summer Music Nights at GITP. Wednesday, July 24th will feature Altona's very own opera singer Nolan Kehler along with his fiance Joanna Loepp Thiessen. Thursday, August 15th past Made in Manitoba guests Warren Friesen and Brett Schultz will be joined by Joe Curtis.
