The effects children experience from recent school shooting will vary.

Says Border Land School Division Clinical Pshychologist Dr. Karen Paine.

Although she has not come across any reports from the division she says location and exposure are factors that will determine pshycological impact.

Paine says those who were closest to the incidents or gained the most exposure from them may receive symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder years down the road.

The disorder may appear in plain fear of school or night terrors.

Paine adds studies have shown that kids experience more fear and anxiety about school than they did five years ago.

She says parents of weary children are to comfort their children and normalize their fear.

Paine notes tell them it's OK to be scared and that although shootings have been happening a lot they are very rare.
