Manitoba’s premier livestock show is underway in Brandon and close to 500 head of cattle are at the Keystone Centre for the four-day show.

The cattle show has been around since the early 1970’s and is one of the three major shows hosted by the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba.

Producers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan have set up shop at the Keystone Centre to take part in the various breed shows and other competitions.

Dallas Johnston of Brookdale is co-chair of Ag-Ex and he says they’re about 150 head of cattle above last year with 450 head registered for this year’s show. “I think a big part of that is no health restrictions and everybody is eligible, and everyone is anxious to get out and visit and I think it’s going to be a great week.”

A number of exhibitors from Saskatchewan have made the trip east to Brandon. Dallas Johnston says without those producers they wouldn’t be able to even hold a show.

“This show gives the breeders an opportunity to bring out and promote their program, showcase what they’re trying to do to hopefully market bulls and females to other breeders and to network and do some business of selling cattle,” said Johnston.

He adds cattle prices are back up and pretty good. “They’re definitely up and it’s always good to see an increase.”

Dallas Johnston says another issue within the industry is attracting enough younger people to get into the beef business. “It is an issue, but I’m really excited to see here on Saturday when we’ll have close to 100 kids here for showmanship and that’s phenomenal. Without the youth starting to get involved is where it ends because some generations sell their cows and that’s it they aren’t looking to get back in.”

“It’s tough but there’s always people who love cattle, like working with them and love the industry.”
