Residents in Altona may have noticed a fair number of mosquitoes on their property this past weekend.

The town has an aggressive larviciding program that it implements every year to keep the pesky bugs in check, but
Public Works Manager Clint Derksen confirms the mosquito numbers did climb on Saturday and Sunday.

"We had a big spike in trap counts over the weekend. We were at 39 females on average per trap. That's a huge spike from where we were, but those numbers have since settled back down to below average. I don't know if the wind (from Monday's storm) blew them out of town, but we're back down to 8.5 females per trap."

Monday's storm also dumped a lot of precipitation on the community, with rainwater pooling on low lying properties and filling up ditches. Derksen expects crews will need to return to some of those areas with larvicide.

"We're looking at getting some of our ditches redone because obviously, we have some standing water. Larviciding is always your best bet so we try to be aggressive on that front."
