$5.1 million in funding has been announced for the Macdonald water treatment plant at Sanford.

The Federal and Provincial governments, as well as the municipality, announced Tuesday an investment of $1.7 million each to convert and expand the facility.

Deputy Reeve Doug Dobrowolski says the money will be used to install newer technology on the filtration system, providing safer water for residents, and allow the R.M. to move forward with growth.

He adds the improvements will allow an extra 20 litres per second to go through the plant, and with the newer technology, they won't have to expand or change the footprint of the facility, saving the municipality money in the end.

The funding will cover 100% of the costs associated with the project.
