Madi Schiller and Kristina Peters say they were excited when the master sponsor for the Art in Bloom Exhibit at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG), one of their suppliers, invited them to take part in the event that happens every other year. The two own Bloom Floral in Winkler.

Schiller shared they were told to choose five pieces from a list of art, to interpret into their own arrangement, and then given one to create.

“We thought because it's not something that you see every day with flowers, it would be a little bit challenging and something more fun for us to interpret, rather than just our everyday floral arrangement...” - Schiller

"(We chose) A Flower Still Life by Mark Chagall (from 1935). It's a beautiful painting of flowers, of moonlight, and there's some figures in there. It really just tells a story with a lot of texture, with more interesting colour than what you would usually find in flowers. We thought because it's not something that you see every day with flowers, it would be a little bit challenging and something more fun for us to interpret rather than just our everyday floral arrangement, something that would challenge our creativity a little bit more, and it did. I think it turned out to be a beautiful piece."

Schiller said she learned a lot through the experience and enjoyed the opportunity to see other artwork on display.

"There were almost 100 different floral pieces that were interpreted there, and it was just really cool to see other people's perspectives, especially as creatives. I think sometimes we get stuck in a little bit of our own box and our own perception of the world. For me, it was really cool to be able to see how other people would view art, and to challenge myself to think outside the box, and to look at things differently, and to be able to keep growing as a creative and as a flower designer."

Family and friends of the Bloom owners attended the event over the weekend with kind words of support for their work, and Schiller expressed her pleasure in seeing others, whom she didn't know, enjoy their work as well.

"It was kind of cool because I saw people taking pictures beside it, and that definitely makes you feel really good. Of all the 50 pieces in the room, someone chose to stand there and take a picture with your art. I think overall, we heard a lot of 'ooos' and 'aaas' when we were there. So, that felt really good. It definitely boosts your ego a little bit."

A mini version of this exhibit piece has been added to the Bloom Floral selections available for online purchase.
