"Businesses, families need to really start making plans for this fall, this respiratory virus season coming," Manitoba's Chief Public Health Officer, Brent Roussin, says. "Because people staying home when they're ill, that's plenty of people when respiratory virus season comes."

He urges businesses to be prepared for increased absenteeism.

In the meantime, Roussin says physical distancing (6 ft.) remains vital.

"A number of our recent cases are linked to such things as funerals, we know that this is where this virus can thrive; it's close, prolonged contact," he adds. "If we're not cautious, this is where we see this virus spread."

He notes if you're unable to maintain physical distancing, wearing an appropriate mask is important.

"But also if you're at an event that's getting crowded and physical distancing is not likely, it's an enclosed crowded space, you should consider leaving," Roussin says.

"And we can't emphasize enough, stay home if you're ill."
