Two different types of flu shots are being made available this year due to an expected second wave of the H1N1 virus.

the Central R.H.A.'s Dr. Shelley Buchan says traditional flu shots are available this month.

She encourages people over the age of 65 and others typically known to be at risk of contracting the flu to get this shot.

The H1N1 flu shot will be available to everyone over 6 months of age come November.

The first wave of H1N1 swept through Canada in May and June.

Buchan says the second wave has the potential to infect 35% of the population.

She is optimistic prevention campaigns focusing on hand hygiene and reducing the spread will keep that percentage much lower.

Buchan stresses the major difference between the regular flu and H1N1 is an increase in respiratory illnesses in younger people, which often results in them being admitted to hospital.

She notes the R.H.A. has ordered more than enough H1N1 vaccine, and they are prepared for the second wave.
