A number of events have taken place in support of the Winkler and District Christmas Cheerboard since their fundraising campaign kicked off earlier this month.

On Thursday, the Cheerboard was presented with a cheque of over $13,000 from the 2nd annual Flyers vs Fire Charity Hockey Classic, an event spearheaded by the Winkler Fire Department.

Dan Peters is part of the Cheerboard committee.

"This was year #2 and we are just in total awe of what this fire department of our city is doing with us, together with us, partnering with us," said Peters. "They have a reach that goes beyond what we had imagined, and the people that support the fire department, and they, in turn, give it back to the Cheerboard is just really, really, really awesome."

An additional $1,900 will be coming in from the event's 50/50 sales and other concessions, bringing the total raised through the Charity Classic to around $16,000.

Winkler firefighter Rick Schroeder said it was great to see so many people come out to the charity classic in support of the Cheerboard. He said they'll soon start brain-storming for next year's charity classic, with hopes of hitting the $20,000 mark.
