Winter Cereals Canada wants to establish a 50 cent per tonne check-off in Manitoba on winter wheat, fall rye, and winter triticale.

Executive Manager Jake Davidson says the proposal has been submitted to the Agricultural Producers Organization Certification Agency through a subsidiary called Winter Cereals Manitoba.

The check-off would be refundable, and the money collected here would be pooled with funds raised by the same levy in Saskatchewan.

The check-off would be used to promote varietal research, increase winter cereal production, and expand markets.

Ballots will be mailed November 20th, and must be returned by December 8th.

Producers who have insured a winter cereal crop in the last 2 crop years will automatically receive a ballot.

Producers who haven't insured a crop are still eligible to vote, and can receive the necessary documentation from Winter Cereals Manitoba.

The check-off proposal must receive 60% support in order for it to be established.
