A 5-year-old child has died after he was hit by a vehicle in a residential bay on the south side of Winkler Sunday afternoon.

According to the Winkler Police Service, the child had been sliding down a snow hill and onto the street with a toboggan when he slid in front of a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, who had been visiting friends in the bay, backed out of a driveway and was unaware that the child had slid out onto the street. The driver reversed, turning the vehicle in the direction of leaving the bay and stopping before moving forward. Police explain, the driver did not notice the child was immediately in front of the vehicle’s bumper, and as the vehicle moved forward it drove over the child. The driver stopped and remained on scene.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the boy lying unresponsive on the road and nearby residents were performing CPR.

The child was transported to Boundary Trails Health Centre by paramedics where he died as a result of his injuries.

Police continue to investigate.
