There was extensive damage to a multi-family building on Winkler’s Royal Crescent Christmas night. The blaze occurred in one of the buildings located on the street's east side which borders the walking path along Highway 32.

Winkler Fire Department received the call around 10:30 p.m. Monday night, Chief Richard Paetzold says the fire was initially in the wall of the main floor and quickly spread to the attic.

“Initial actions were to search and evacuate all remaining occupants still in the building, (and) then proceeded to work on the fire,” said Paetzold who noted all occupants got out of the building safely. There were no injuries in the blaze.

He noted the fire damage was contained to a couple of rooms and the entire attic space, with smoke and water damage varying throughout remainder of the building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No damage estimate is available at this time.
