The Canadian Wheat Board is pleased a general purpose class of wheat will be established by the Canadian Grain Commission.

Earl Geddes, Vice President of Product Development, says the new class will allow growers to produce high yielding, high energy varieties which can be sold into the feed or ethanol sectors.

He expects more research dollars will flow into feed wheat breeding programs because the new class will eliminate the issue of high yielding,  low protein varieties having to be registered under the current milling wheat class.

With lower protein content a possible requirement for the new class, Geddes expects plant breeders will be able to develop varieties which yield significantly higher than today's feed wheats.

The Canada Western General Purpose class will be estabslihed August 1st, 2008.
