As construction on the New Discovery Trails School is underway at the west end of Parkhill Drive, Western School Division Trustees and Winkler Coop staff gathered for a cheque presentation. giving an early boost in funds towards the $1 million project to put in a full-size track and soccer field on the school grounds.

General Manager for Winkler Coop Evan Toews explained why this project was chosen.

"It's a great honor for us to be able to contribute again to the community, this time in the form of a $20,000 donation towards the Western School Division and the track and the facilities here at the new school in Morden. It's exciting to be a part of it and to see what role that has to play in the lives of our children and also the lives of all the citizens here in Morden."

Trustee Darcy Wolfe is on the ad hoc committee charged with raising the funds for the community undertaking.

"This $20,000 donation that we're getting today from Coop means so much to the school division, means so much to the community. It's going to go directly into the fund that's going to be helping to build and complete this project."

Wolfe said they have been busy getting the word and will continue to fundraise for this important project.

"We are relying on the community and on local businesses and local foundations to come together and help us build this project. Our goal is to raise around $1 million. So far, we've applied for numerous grants, applied for and talked to numerous companies, and we have had more donations and those announcements will be coming soon."

He stressed the value of this project will benefit the whole community.

"It's a project that is not just for students in Western School Division. This is truly a community project and is designed to benefit everybody in the entire community, from young and old newcomers, people who have lived in Morden for a long time, and I really think this will be something that will bring more people to Morden and bring also new events that we can't host here currently."
