Winkler Fire Department responded to three incidents today as the region was hit with the first blizzard of the season.

Fire Chief Richard Paetzold says they have already responded to accidents and cars in the ditch on Pembina East, another south of Winkler on PTH 32 and on PTH 14 near Reinfeld.

"Those were the three we were dispatched to but in our travels we saw many other vehicles in the ditch," Paetzold says. "And we're anticipating more."

So far, Paetzold says there haven't been any major injuries reported at this time.

Carman-Dufferin Fire Department has responded to multiple incidents as well, and urge travellers to stay off the highways if possible.

"If you’re in town, stay there. If you have kids the need picked up at the schools, have someone in town do it for you. There is no need risking your or anyone else’s life today," the department wrote on Facebook Thursday afternoon.
