The Winkler Fire Department will welcome some new members by this fall.

Fire Chief Garry Klassen says the department needs members who are from the area, with a sense of community.

They also need to understand the time commitment.

Klassen notes they have training Wednesday evenings, and in the first year members need to acquire their Level One Fire Fighters status, which is a 120 hour course.

There are some prerequisites when applying for a position with the department.

They include being 18 years or older, and passing an aptitude and physical test.

Klassen adds they are planning that physical test for the beginning of August.

Once hired, new members need to get registered for a C.P.R. and first aid course.

Klassen notes the reason they have space for some new fire fighters is they want to make sure they are covered on long weekends and during the day, when it's harder to find people who can get to the hall on a moments notice.

This year they hope to add about 5 new members to the department.
