A University of Manitoba conference on the future of the Canadian Wheat Board heard the marketing choice stance of a Portage area farmer.

Jim Pallister feels Western Canadian growers have lost processing opportunities because of the single desk.

He points to what happened in the oat industry once the grain was removed removed from the Board's control, specifically the Can-Oat milling facility in Portage.

Pallister adds a similar experience has taken place in the hog industry once single desk marketer was desolved in our province.

Pallister says the C.W.B. has been a wet blanket on the economic development of the Prairies.

He notes businesses shy away from investing here because they may have to bow to the control of the board.
