The Garden Valley Collegiate Zodiacs turned an early two-goal deficit into a dominant 10–2 victory over the Carman Cougars Wednesday night, in a Zone IV high school hockey matchup that featured an offensive explosion, physical play and plenty of emotion.
GVC found itself trailing early, but responded with four first-period goals before continuing to build its lead through the final two periods.
The Zodiacs were led offensively by Captain Bryce Neufeld (#12), who recorded a hat trick, while Graham Friesen (#13) and Coden Thiessen (#22) each contributed two goals.

Carman strikes first before GVC responds
The Cougars came out with early pressure, opening the scoring at 17:31 of the first period after capitalizing on a rebound in front of GVC goaltender Peyton Enns (#35).
Carman doubled its lead at 15:55, taking advantage of a loose puck in the corner that Enns was unable to control.
Trailing 2–0, the Zodiacs began to find their footing.
Neufeld (#12) got GVC on the board at 12:54, sending a shot low through a screen to cut the deficit to one.
Just 50 seconds later, Friesen (#13) broke in on a breakaway after a Carman defender lost an edge, tying the game at two.
Friesen struck again at 11:03, finding the top corner to give the Zodiacs their first lead of the night.
Thiessen (#22) added another at 8:13, tipping a shot from the point past the Carman goaltender to make it 4–2 heading into the first intermission.

Zodiacs take control in the second
GVC carried its momentum into the middle frame, continuing to generate scoring chances and put pressure on the Carman defence.
Thiessen (#22) scored his second of the night at 14:27, beating the goaltender blocker side to extend the lead to 5–2.
The Zodiacs continued to capitalize on their opportunities, with Terry Enns (#25) adding a one-timer at 8:14.
Neufeld (#12) followed at 6:08, collecting a rebound to make it 7–2. The goal prompted Carman to make a change in net.
Teigon Friesen (#19) rounded out the second-period scoring with a tap-in at 1:51, sending GVC into the final period with an 8–2 advantage.

Physicality takes over as tempers rise
While the Zodiacs continued to find the back of the net, the physicality of the game became increasingly noticeable.
Penalties began to accumulate as both teams battled for position and possession, with the second period featuring a large scrum at 4:02 that brought players together after the whistle.
The incident drew loud reactions from the crowd, with Carman supporters calling for penalties as the intensity continued to build.
The third period featured more penalties, including a charging call against GVC at 18:47 and additional roughing and tripping penalties as the game continued.
Despite the increasingly physical atmosphere, the Zodiacs maintained their offensive pressure and kept their composure.

Neufeld completes the hat trick
GVC added two more goals in the third period to complete the 10–2 victory.
At 16:10, Neufeld (#12) collected the puck following a heavy hit from teammate Dallas Guenter (#14), walked in and lifted a shot over the goaltender's shoulder to complete his hat trick.
Joel Friesen (#16) added the final goal with 3:32 remaining, putting the finishing touches on the Zodiacs' offensive performance.
Enns (#35) was also a key part of the result, making several important stops throughout the night, including a breakaway save in the second period as the Carman attackers looked to get back into the game.
After allowing two goals in the opening period, Enns and the defence in front of him kept the Cougars off the scoresheet for the remainder of the contest.

Mullin's message of resilience pays off
Coming into Wednesday's matchup, GVC head coach Morgan Mullin had identified defensive coverage in front of the net and applying pressure on Carman's defence as important areas for her team.
Mullin also spoke about the team's inconsistent start to the season, but pointed to the players' resilience as one of the biggest positives.
"Those boys have yet to quit on me," Mullin said ahead of the game.
She had also emphasized the importance of establishing a first-to-the-puck mentality and getting players to buy into the team's systems.
Against Carman, the Zodiacs showed what that commitment could produce, responding to an early deficit with 10 unanswered goals.
The 10–2 victory gives GVC an encouraging performance to build on as the Zone IV high school hockey season continues.
