The Winkler-Morden Habitat For Humanity’s first house build is slowly nearing completion, one nail at a time.

“Building is going really well. The roof is on, the shingles are done, the windows are in and the house is all closed up. Now we're working on interior things,” says Secretary and PR chair, Christina Falk.

She says the snowstorm over Thanksgiving weekend, along with the heavy amounts of rainfall this autumn has made building more difficult.

“It was setting us back a little bit at the beginning but right now we're feeling pretty good. We're good on schedule. We're hoping to be finished by February but of course, we'd love to get done before that if possible.”

Falk says scheduling volunteers is tricky depending on what tasks are completed and when, so they ask anyone hoping to volunteer put their name on the list so they can be called when their services are needed. (Email them at Volunteer@WinklerMordenHabitat.ca)

They've been very thankful so far for all of the volunteers and tradespeople helping, and the businesses also getting their staff involved in the community initiative.

“It’s really fun, we've had really great feedback. Winkler Co-op was the first one to do it and then we've had Access Credit Union, and it’s a great day to bring employees together,” adds Falk.

She notes that the main workers on the house are of course its future residents, the Wiebe family, who put in 500 hours of work on building before they get their keys.

The chapter has also begun fundraising for their second house which they plan to build in the neighbouring City of Morden.
