Former Winkler Flyers Assistant Captain Shael Hechter will continue his hockey career in Minnesota. The Winnipeg native has accepted the Count Folke Bernadotte Memorial Scholarship and will play at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota this fall.

Hechter, who also received an award of $750 from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Scholarship Fund, was acquired by the Flyers in a trade with the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League prior to the start of the 2009-2010 season. He finished tied for third on the team with 50 points (24g, 26a) in 60 regular season games and added five more points in the playoffs.

The Golden Gusties finished in first place last season in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; lost 2-1 in overtime to St. Thomas in the Conference final and then dropped a 3-1 decision to the St. Nobert Green Knights in the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division III Championship. The Gusties finished their season with a record of 20-7-2.
