The Manitoba government, Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP), and Fertilizer Canada have officially signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) focusing on 4R Nutrient Stewardship

The 4R Nutrient Stewardship was developed by Fertilizer Canada and focuses on applying the "Right Source at the Right Rate, at the Right Time, and in the Right Place.

Agriculture Minister Derek Johnson says initiatives that balance crop production with environmental protection measures are critical to ensuring Manitoba’s agricultural sector is well-equipped to meet the needs of future generations.

"This MOU supports and strengthens our government’s objectives in food security and affordability, in addition to environmental performance, with the nutrient stewardship programming developed by Canada’s fertilizer industry."

KAP President Bill Campbell is a signatory on the MOU and says farmers are recognizing the importance of the 4R system.

"Western Canadian canola growers have seen an increase of 10 per cent to a level of 54 per cent doing the basic soil testing requirements. So, it is progressing and catching on with even the basics, but as technology evolves and we start to get into variable rate and zone mapping, I think we will see further increases and further benefits."

Campbell says as the conversation moves forward with regards to environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, and public trust, engagement in the 4R program will be extremely beneficial.

"I think we need to be able to utilize research and government programs on science based information with concrete results so that we can move ahead as an industry."

Environment, Climate and Parks Minister Jeff Wharton says a 4R MOU implementation committee - which includes staff from Manitoba Agriculture and Manitoba Environment, Climate and Parks - will continue to move forward with a work plan and budget.

Karen Proud, President and CEO, Fertilizer Canada says Manitoba continues to show its commitment and dedication to climate-smart agriculture practices.

"We are pleased to continue this partnership that offers farmers sustainable solutions for their crops."

The new MOU will continue through Dec. 31, 2024.
