Over 40 people drove out to Lonesand this past weekend to help Dwayne Tesarski pick up the pieces of his property that was decimated by floodwaters this past June.

Tesarski’s house was so destroyed by the flood that it will likely be declared a total loss. Still, he says that did not stop the dozens of volunteers from coming by on Saturday to help clean up his yard and strip his home of anything that might be salvageable.

Armed with chainsaws, wheelbarrows, and good spirits, volunteers began showing up at around 8 AM. Tesarski provided the makeshift crew with guidance as well as face masks, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, and cold beverages to get them through the hot day safely.

When he initially put out his request for the public’s assistance, Tesarski was unsure how many people would respond nor how much work would actually get done. On both accounts, he was impressed.

“It was amazing,” he says. “It just blew my mind what a little army of people can do!”

He thanks the many local businesses, church groups, and organizations for their support on-site and gives a special shout out to Little Caeser’s who provided the whole team with free pizza to keep up their strength.

“It was a good atmosphere,” comments Tesarski. “When you’re all alone trying to deal with all of this it really breaks you down deep down inside. You don’t even know where to start. But when all of these guys came over on Saturday… it was awesome.”

Tesarski says the group re-leveled his driveway, shored up his dike, hauled away all of the wood and deadfall from his lawn, and removed everything of value that remained inside of his house. In roughly five hours they completed a job that would have taken him weeks, if not months, by himself. He says it is acts of unmerited generosity such as these that give him hope during these difficult times.

The damage to Tesarski's home is valued at $80,000 or more; his total insurance payout was $25,000. There is no word yet on whether the government will be offering him anything by way of compensation.
