A local resident is raising money and awareness around mental health while opening up about her own journey

After moving to Winkler with her husband in 2017, Kailey Thiessen says she loved the life they were creating together. Then in 2018 she says, "something felt off."

In 2018, she went for a regular doctor checkup looking for answers as to why she wasn’t sleeping, was always tired, and losing her motivation for the things she loved the most.

It was at that appointment the words 'depression' and 'anxiety' were brought to her attention.

"I’ve been on anti-depressants for two years and seeing my counsellor at least once a month for the past year. Thanks to her (who works through Eden Mental Care Services and Pathways Community Mental Health Services), I’ve rediscovered my old self again, and am no longer ashamed or embarrassed about how I felt."

Thiessen says until February 7, a portion of their proceeds at Aura Studio will be donated to Eden Health Care Service's Recovery of Hope counselling services. Aura Studio, the Pembina Valley's first barre fitness studio with locations in Carman and Winkler offers a unique workout experience rooted in classical ballet.

Thiessen explains she's thankful for the work of Eden.

"We are deeply grateful to Kailey for her vulnerability in telling her story," Eden Foundation's Earl Reimer says. "And for the generosity with which she has recounted her experience with Eden and her generosity in creating this fund-raising event."
