The federal long gun registry remains in force, after Wednesday's House of Commons vote that defeated a bill by Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Hoeppner to abolish it.

It's an issue that won't go away, though, with the Conservatives pledging to make it an election issue. Portage-Lisgar Liberal Riding Association President Shawn Rawlings admits there was concern among his party about some rural N.D.P. members who were going to vote in favour of scrapping the registry.....

Rawlings sees the registry as an effective tool for police, noting it's used 13,000 times a day. He accuses the Harper government of not respecting how the people of Canada have spoken through their MP's.
