The objectives of the dry bean breeding program at Agriculture Canada's Morden Research Station are always changing.

Dr.  Parthiba Balasubramanian says some things do stay the same such as selecting lines of high seed quality and maturity.

Research on common bacterial blight and anthracnose resistant varieties is also on-going.

Work is also being root rot and rust resistant varieties is also being conducted, but not as intensely.

He notes crosses are being made to bring in the resistant genes so we have it in our germplasm, so if and when root rot and rust become a problem new lines can be developed quickly.

Parthiba took part in the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association annual edible bean tour which took place earlier this week.
