Once operational, two massive bio-diesel plants in North Dakota could require nearly 500,000 tonnes of Canadian canola per year.

The Northern Canola Growers Association has speculated at least half of demand generated by the facilities being built in Velva and Minot would be met by Canadian canola.

Barb Isman, President of the Canola Council of Canada, says the developments in the U.S. represent a significant opportunity particularly in the short term.

She notes moving large volumes of Canadian canola seed across the border would be new.

Isman adds depending on the U.S. market for long term sustainability in the canola industry isn't suggested because increased American production and the threat of trade action could limit future prospects.

Isman feels the development of a made in Canada bio-diesel industry would provide the best long term support for the domestic industry.
