A significant amount of malting barley has been selected so far this year by grain and malting companies.

Michael Brophy is the senior program manager for the Canadian Wheat Board's product development and marketing support department.

On the two row side Metcalfe has close to 60%, CDC Copeland has 20%, and CDC Kendall has 15% of the selections.

For six row Legacy leads the way at 60% of the selections followed by Tradition.

Brophy stresses before you decide on next year's malting barley varieties consult with the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre's recommended list.

He adds there's a strong correlation between this year's selections and what will be in demand next fall.
