The unseasonable mild weather is allowing a number of construction projects to advance further along this year in the MSTW Planning District.

MSTW General Manager, Glen Wieler said they're seeing a lot of industrial, institutional, and commercial type projects continuing.

With the nice weather, Wieler said a lot of people have been trying to get that "one last foundation in."

Wieler said the nice weather has also allowed construction to begin this fall on a number of projects that were only slated to start next spring. One of the more notable ones is a new building going up on the last available lot in the Roblin Estates development at the corner of 15th Street and Highway 14 in Winkler.

Meanwhile, permits for multi-family housing are also still being taken out on a consistent basis, similar to the first 9 months of the year. Wieler noted construction recently started on 6 new duplexes in the Northpoint Developments, east of 15th Street, and north of Northands Parkway in Winkler.

Wieler highlighted Morden's new Discovery Trails School, an over $40-million project that went on the books earlier this year.  "Definitely I wouldn't say it skewed the numbers, but it jumps the value of work tremendously," said Wieler.

In Stanley, work on the $100-million expansion to BTHC has been ongoing and will continue to have a huge impact going into the next year.

Right now, Wieler said single-family housing starts continue to be slower. Construction of multi-family housing is up with permits still being taken out on a consistent basis, similar to the first 9 months of the year.

Even with the advancements of some projects because of the unusually nice fall weather, Wieler said they are seeing some of the typical slowdown for this time of year. "But, with some of the upcoming projects, we're anticipating a strong 2024 as well."

Wieler noted construction recently started on 6 new duplexes in the Northpoint Developments, east of 15th Street, and north of Northands Parkway in Winkler.

Foundation and other site work is also well underway for a new Wendy's restaurant north of Winkler's Boundary Trail, just west of the new KFC.
