Neepawa's MJHL hockey club says it's time to go in a new direction in an announcement saying they will discontinue the use of their logo and name.

"The Neepawa MJHL team's Board of Directors has made the decision to discontinue the use of the word 'Natives' in the team’s name effective for the 2021-22 season," the club says in an announcement online.

Their current logo is a picture of a stereotyped Indigenous man with feathers in his hair.

The team is expected to immediately begin a process to select a new name and logo. "That process will include research and input from different community members, stakeholders and fans of the Club," the team says. "We appreciate your patience and support as we go through this process."

Reaction from supporters has been mixed so far with some decrying the change. However, others see it as the right move and a new opportunity for the club.

"This is a great opportunity to re-brand the organization and take things in the direction that Coach Pearson sees fit," Jenna Lowry says in a comment. "What an exciting time to be a part of the organization forging a new path, while still honouring past alumni! Looking forward to seeing where things go!"

The club says that "Going forward, we want the focus to be on the work we do in our community and our commitment to improving on the ice as we prepare for the upcoming season."
