Morden resident Bernhard Teichroeb hadn't given STARS Air Ambulance much thought until the fateful day it helped save his daughter's life.

Wanting to pay it forward, and increase awareness around the life-changing service, Teichroeb took part in STARS Rescue On The Island Wednesday. Participants were transported to a remote island location in the Whiteshell with only their smartphone to raise $50,000.

"The main push is to raise awareness. I want to stress the importance of the service, and until it hits home, and doesn't affect your life or someone you (know), you may feel you don't need it. But when every second counts in an emergency

In addition to Teichroeb, there were two other participants; Al Babiuk, President and C.E.O. of Loewen Windows and Doors, as well as Sarah Normandeau, Councillor with the R.M. of Ste. Anne.

As of Thusrday morning, the fundraiser had brought in over $223,000. The trio combined raised more than $120,000 a week before the event even began.

The scaled-down event size was a deliberate effort by STARS to adhere COVID-19 safety protocols.

Colleen Mayer, STARS Director of Development for Manitoba, says safety is a core value of STARS, and the non-profit organization put in an exhaustive amount of work, so the Rescue event could proceed.

"The safety of our participants, STARS team members and volunteers is our chief concern, and we have taken a number of precautions to ensure all involved can safely enjoy this terrific event. Among the many measures, we have put in place are mandatory masks, social distancing and decreasing the number of participants, volunteers and staff involved in the event."

With more than $1.5 million raised since the event began in 2013, Rescue on the Island continues to be one of STARS' most vital fundraisers.
