Lake Minnewasta was the site of Morden Recreation’s first 3-on-3 Pond Hockey Tournament on the weekend.

Brian Thiessen, Lake Minnewasta Campground Manager and co-organizer of the tournament, says he couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

“It was a lot of anticipation. Then the teams started to fall in line, which was really awesome. Pushing for a deadline helped us to know how many teams [to expect] so that we could make the draws, which was always the stressful part. The other stress was the weather, and whether it would hold out. We had to do a little bit of flooding here early this week. You never know if it's going to work out the way you wanted to, but we had some good ice early in the day. It sure got a good beating though as it went on. But the turnout was amazing!”

Thiessen says the event was just what they wanted it to be – family-oriented.

“It was excitement! I know there was provincials going on the same weekend - why would I choose that, right? But anyway, I mean everybody that took the time to come and talk to us appreciated what we had put on. I think it's a marker of a good, successful event."

There was a lot of buzz all day, said Thiessen.

“I think it was really good, seeing people being able to get out and interact and feel a little bit more normal.”

Thiessen would like to see another organization take over organization of the tournament next year and make it even bigger.

The days draws are posted for participants at Morden’s 3-On-3 Pond Hockey tournament.
